ABOUT YOUR TEACHER
Irena
Irena, is a retired psychiatric nurse who has always been interested in the workings of our minds. Born in Poland after the Second World War,during the communist regime, Irena experienced poverty, food shortages and lack of freedoms that we in Australia can not imagine.
Irena came to Australia as a refugee and discovered an abundance of food, material possessions, freedoms previously denied, the company of friendly and relaxed people and of course beautiful weather, It was like “going from hell to heaven.”However, with all this abundance and freedom Irena was still not able to find happiness.
It was at this point that Irena started to question:
Where does happiness really come from?
Stress and the inability to find any satisfaction lead Irena to find yoga, meditation, ancient teachings and the wisdom especially offered by Tibetan Buddhism.
After attending a 10 day Calm Abiding Meditation retreat in 2006 Irena discovered what she had been looking for all her life; that to be happy we must train our mind. To transform the mind, from self-centeredness to compassion, anger to love, confusion to peace, and sadness to joy.
What Irena discovered was so precious that she decided to attend a training course and she now teaches others the priceless wisdom of Calm Abiding Meditation. Irena has now been facilitating meditation courses for the last 12 years.

Charok Lama, also known as Charok Sherpa, is a Tibetan Buddhist leader born in 1992 in the Solu Khumbu region of Nepal. He is recognized as the reincarnation of Kusho Mangde, a renowned Nyingma yogi known for his profound spiritual achievements. Charok Lama was identified as the reincarnation at the age of two, setting the course for his remarkable journey as a spiritual guide and teacher.
At the age of four, he moved to Kopan Monastery in Kathmandu, where he took his rabjung vows and began his formal education in Buddhism. By the age of eight, he continued his spiritual training at Sera Je Monastic University in South India, where he was enthroned. There, Charok Lama underwent rigorous studies of the four main philosophical treatises: Pramanavartika, Prajnaparamita, Madhyamika, and Vinaya, earning the prestigious rikchung degree and exhaling in Buddhist philosophy. His education, rooted in the Mahayana tradition, reflects his commitment to understanding and embodying the teachings of the Buddha.
Charok Lama is widely respected for his wisdom, compassion, and dedication to spreading the Buddha’s teachings. Deeply concerned about the world’s growing sense of confusion and disconnection, he emphasizes the importance of mindfulness, compassion, and living with a clear sense of purpose. He is also known for addressing the ways in which ego can interfere with spiritual practice, offering practical insights into cultivating inner peace and clarity.
Throughout his life, Charok Lama has maintained a close relationship with Lama Zopa Rinpoche, one of the most prominent Tibetan Buddhist masters of our time. He continues to serve globally to preserve and practice the teaching of the Buddha.
In 2020, at the age of 27, Charok Lama made the significant decision to return his monk’s vows, fulfilling the third stage of his childhood vision: to go to the West and teach. This decision mirrors the life of his predecessor, Kusho Mangde, and signifies his commitment to reaching people in need beyond traditional monastic settings. Since then, he has traveled and shared teachings in Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, and the United States, spreading the values of mindfulness, compassion, and purpose to diverse audiences.
Through his journey, Charok Lama continues to inspire others with his message of hope and the transformative power of Buddhist practice in navigating life’s challenges.
